China, Russia and Latin American countries congratulate Lula on victory

Parties congratulate Lula's victory and cite democracy

After the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the second round of elections, this Sunday (30), world leaders greet the victorious candidate.

Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Lula this morning (31), according to state broadcaster CCTV. “I attach great importance to the development of China-Brazil relations,” Xi said.

“I am willing to work with President-elect Lula, from a strategic and long-term perspective, to jointly plan and promote to a new level the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Brazil, for the benefit of both countries and their peoples.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin also congratulated the president-elect on winning a third term. In note on site of the Kremlin, Putin said he hoped Brazil-Russia ties would strengthen and that the election result shows Lula’s “high political authority”.

Latin America

Leaders of Latin America manifested themselves yesterday, greeting the PT. “Long live Lula”, tweeted the colombian Gustavo Petro, who in June was elected the first leftist president of his country.

Argentine President Alberto Fernández, said on twitter that “His victory [de Lula] opens a new era for the history of Latin America. A time of hope and a future that begins today.”

“Congratulations brother,” wrote Bolivian President Luis Arce. “His victory strengthens democracy and integration in Latin America.”

“Democracy won today in Brazil,” said Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, whose ties to Lula have often been cited by Bolsonaro to question the PT’s commitment to democracy.

USA, Canada and Europe

US President Joe Biden greeted Lula’s victory in a note: “I send my greetings to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his election to be the next president of Brazil through free, fair and credible elections. that we work together to continue cooperation between the two countries in the months and years ahead”.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the two would face “many common challenges” together.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that he “looks forward to working” with the future president: “I look forward to working with @LulaOficial to strengthen the partnership between our countries, deliver results for Canadians and Brazilians and advance shared priorities – such as protecting the environment. Congratulations, Lula!”
