The Chinese health authorities decreed this Monday the confinement of the city of Shanghai, which has 26 million inhabitants, in order to stop the expansion of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
The directors point out that in a period of nine days the city will be divided in two to combine confinement with the carrying out of massive tests.
From today until this Friday, the districts east of the Huangpu River in the Pudong area will be confined, while the rest of the territory will continue from the first day of April until next Tuesday.
The movements of citizens will be limited, taking into account that only those who have a negative PCR test result within 48 business hours will be able to leave or enter the territory.
The restrictions include public transport and private vehicles, which are prohibited from circulating on city streets. At the same time, companies and factories will see their activities suspended, while office workers will work online.
In turn, the health officials have called on the population to: “support, understand and cooperate with the city’s epidemic prevention and control work, and participate in nucleic acid tests in an orderly manner”.
Meanwhile, official statistics indicate that the city of Shanghai has registered a cumulative 5,293 positive cases of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic. Currently, China is going through its worst wave of infections while reporting 1,275 infected on its last day.
