Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, rejected Washington’s criticism of Beijing for not taking concrete steps to resolve the situation between Kiev and Moscow, or allying with the West in imposing sanctions on the Eurasian country.
China, he added, always adopted an objective and fair attitude, made its independent judgments on the basis of the matter in question and played a constructive role in the peace talks.
He reiterated the opposition to the sanctions due to their counterproductive effect, warning that they will only lead to economic losses in multiple directions and will also disrupt the political process to resolve the issue.
Zhao stressed to the United States to refrain from punishing Chinese companies and citizens by imposing punitive measures on Russia, because otherwise it will be met with a “firm and determined response.”
“We hope that the parties involved remain calm (…) and support diplomatic efforts for a peaceful solution and de-escalation of the crisis in Ukraine,” he added.
A few days ago, China spoke out against the United States’ efforts to discredit its position in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and accused it of seeking advantages by disseminating false information about the crisis and evading responsibility for it.
Its authorities questioned the supposed purposes of the White House to promote the expansion of NATO for peaceful purposes, prevent a war in Europe and support a negotiated solution, when it continues to provide military aid.
Even President Xi Jinping found it necessary to abandon the Cold War mentality and pay attention to everyone’s security concerns.
“China’s basic position is to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, and adherence to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter,” he said.
He also specified that the Asian giant is ready to work with all parts of the international community in establishing a “common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable” security concept.
