China accused this Thursday (05.25.2023) the United States and its Western allies of carrying out a “disinformation campaign” after the publication of a Report Claiming Beijing Sponsored Cyber Attack against critical US infrastructure networks.
“It is clear that this is a collective disinformation campaign,” said Mao Ning, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry.
In a report published Wednesday, the technology company Microsoft and a US intelligence agency denounced that an organization sponsored by the Chinese governmentis carrying out a spying and hacking campaign on “critical infrastructure” in the country.
In the statement, the tech giant said that the Chinese organization known as “Volt Typhoon” has been carrying out a campaign of cyber attacks that could “disrupt communication” between the United States and Asia in the future.
The hackers have been active since mid-2021 and directed its attacks at organizations in Guam, an island in the Pacific that is part of the US, and elsewhere in the country.
“Affected organizations span the communications, manufacturing, utilities, transportation, construction, maritime, government, information technology and education sectors,” Microsoft said.
The National Security Agency (NSA) confirmed the Chinese incursion also on Wednesday. “An agent, sponsored by China, and who lives outside the territory (of the US)is using tools embedded in networks to evade our defenses and leave no trace,” said Rob Joyce, the NSA’s director of cybersecurity.
