Chimbote: new 5.1 earthquake keeps the Ring of Fire under surveillance

A new earthquake of magnitude 5.1 shook Chimbote this Sunday at 6:19 pm, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). The epicenter was located 66 kilometers west of the Chimbote district, Santa province in Áncash, with a depth of 51 kilometers.

The earthquake was felt with intensity IV on the Mercalli scale in Chimbote. So far, the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) does not report personal or material damage in the region.​

The Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation of the Navy ruled out any risk of tsunami on the Peruvian coast through its official account on X.​

This event occurs a few hours after the 6.0 magnitude earthquake recorded on Saturday in the same area, which left structural damage and injuries in Áncash and La Libertad. The authorities maintain preventive monitoring against possible aftershocks.​
