Chilean Senate asks Boric to demand the release of Cuban political prisoners

Votación del acuerdo relacionado con Cuba en el Senado chileno

MIAMI, United States. – The Senate of Chile approved this Tuesday an agreement that requests the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, to demand the cessation of repression in Cuba, as well as the release of political prisoners and the holding of free and multiparty elections.

The proposal, which was presented by a group of senators from different parties and denounces the “crimes against humanity” committed by the Cuban regime, was approved with 15 votes in favor, zero against and two abstentions.

The agreement indicates that in Cuba there are at least 1,105 political prisoners, including 117 women and 329 people with serious pathologies that put their lives at risk. According to the agreement, these detainees face inhumane conditions, such as denial of medicine, lack of food, and isolation in forced labor camps. “The Cuban communist regime not only represses, but also uses resources to perpetuate a system based on misery and corruption,” the text points out.

The agreement also indicates that the repression has reached independent media. The entry into force of the Social Communication Lawdenounced by the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), restricts legality to media linked to the Cuban Communist Party (PCC). According to the senators, this law deepens information fences and further limits press freedom on the Island.

For these reasons, the Chilean Senate demanded the intervention of international institutions to initiate judicial proceedings against those responsible for crimes against humanity in Cuba. “It is essential that responsibilities be established for the human rights violations committed on the Island,” the agreement highlights.

The text also urges the international community, particularly the European Union, to stop financing the Cuban regime. “The resources that come from free and democratic nations only serve to maintain repression and misery, and do not benefit the Cuban people,” he maintains.

The agreement salutes the efforts of the Cuban resistance and calls on the island’s democratic forces to continue working for unity. “The Cuban people need unity to confront a regime that has systematically violated their rights for more than 65 years,” the senators emphasized.

The legislators conclude by asking the Chilean State not to ignore the serious situation facing the Cuban people. “The situation in Cuba is very serious in political, human and economic aspects. “Chile cannot be indifferent to this reality,” states the agreement.
