Chile Vamos proposed that the body that drafts the new Constitution be made up of 50 experts and 50 elected people. This is how the opposition coalition defined it in a document called “Agreement for stability, reform of the State and good Constitution”, which will be discussed this Friday with the ruling party, within the framework of the dialogues between the parties to continue with the constituent process.
The opposition parties named the drafting body as the Constitutional Council and defined that it be made up of 100 people: 50 from a Committee of Experts and 50 elected by direct vote in accordance with the electoral system applicable to the Senate.

In the document, Chile Vamos pointed out that Congress chooses the members of the Committee of Experts, in proportion to the representation of the different political forces in Parliament. “Their election will be by closed list, proposed by the Chamber of Deputies and ratified by the Senate, in both cases by votes of 4/7 of its members,” the text indicates.
The members of the committee “should be people of recognized expertise in public, constitutional and institutional affairs,” the document states. In addition, the opposition defined that ex-conventionists or active parliamentarians should not participate in it.
The objective of the committee will be to draft a draft, which will serve as the basis for discussion and drafting of the new constitutional text.
On the other hand, the text indicates that the election of the other 50 people is mandatory. On the lists, they must be equal and composed only of political parties and coalitions. They may include independents.
The Chile Vamos document also calls for elections to be held on March 26, 2023.
Regarding the Constitutional Council, the proposal of the opposition coalition seeks that it work under the regulations of the Senate, that the votes have a quorum of 4/7 and that its duration is four months.
