The governments of Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay regretted Venezuela’s decision to “revoke” Brazil’s custody of Argentina’s interests in Caracas; and urged the administration of Nicolás Maduro to “respect international norms”
Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay spoke out on the afternoon of September 7 regarding Venezuela’s decision to “immediately” revoke the approval given to Brazil to represent Argentina’s interests and to be the custodian of its assets and facilities in that country. They indicated that the measure is “unjustified” and asked the administration of Nicolás Maduro to “respect international norms.”
“The Government of Chile expresses its concern about the decision of the Government of Venezuela to revoke, immediately and unjustifiably, the authorization it had granted to Brazil to provide protection and custody to the Argentine Embassy in Caracas (…) We express our rejection of this decision and our solidarity with the governments of Argentina and Brazil for the situation they are currently experiencing,” the statement said. Chilean Foreign Ministry.
The Luis Lacalle Pou administration stated that Venezuela’s action “constitutes a violation of international regulations and a new violation of the rights of Venezuelan citizens seeking asylum in the facilities of the Argentine diplomatic representation, who have already been denied safe passage to leave Venezuelan territory and are currently victims of a permanent siege by the regime’s security forces.”

Finally, Uruguay expressed “its solidarity with the Argentine Republic and the Federative Republic of Brazil in these difficult times” and hoped for a “resolution in accordance with international law and the tradition of peaceful coexistence among Latin American nations.”
While Paraguay stated that it “regrets and rejects the unilateral decision taken by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to revoke the authorization granted to Brazil (…) Paraguay recognizes Brazil’s representation in safeguarding the interests and custody of the properties” of Argentina in Venezuelan territory.
The “reasons” of Venezuela
The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry reported on the morning of September 7 that the measure was in response to the alleged planning of “terrorist acts” inside the diplomatic compound; and “assassination attempts” against Maduro and Delcy Rodríguez.
Since Friday night, the residence of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas has been surrounded by officials from the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) and the Directorate of Strategic and Tactical Actions (DAET).
Until midday on Saturday, September 7, those seeking asylum at the embassy were reporting, via X (formerly Twitter), that security agents were not allowing journalists to approach the diplomatic headquarters, and that they had closed “all access points” to the premises.
