Chile sends delegation to Venezuela to “negotiate” new repatriation flights

Last Sunday, May 7, a plane transferred to Venezuela a total of 115 migrants stranded for weeks on the northern border of Chile, who could not return to Chilean territory or enter Peru due to lack of documentation. Chile has recently tightened its policies against illegal migration to try to stop the increase in insecurity


The Chilean Foreign Minister, alberto van klaverensaid this Tuesday, May 9, that an official delegation will travel to Caracas on Wednesday, May 10, to “negotiate” with the Venezuelan government new flights to repatriate the hundreds of migrants who remain stranded on the Chilean-Peruvian border.

“We want to know Venezuela’s willingness to generate new flights. The information that your Embassy in Chile has given us is that there are several citizens who want to return,” said the minister during an appearance in a parliamentary commission.

The official delegation that will travel to Venezuela will be made up of the Secretary General for Foreign Policy, Alex Wetzig, and the Consular Director General, Rodrigo Donoso, as announced by Van Klaveren.

A plane transferred a total of 115 migrants stranded for weeks on the northern border to Venezuela, who could not return to Chilean territory or enter Peru due to lack of documentation.

The flight, which departed for Caracas from the border city of Arica, 2,000 kilometers north of Santiago, was paid for by the Government of Nicolás Maduro and is part of the “Vuelta a la Patria” program, thanks to which nearly 30,000 Venezuelans from 25 different countries, according to official figures.

“The next flights are not necessarily going to leave Arica, we do not want situations like the one experienced on the northern border to be repeated,” said the minister, referring to the dozens of migrants who moved to the northern city at the last minute with the hope of to board the flight.

Chile, which has kept its border militarized since the end of February, has recently tightened its policies against illegal migration to try to curb the increase in insecurity, which has caused thousands of migrants to try to leave the country.
