Chile confirms sending aid to Cuba and describes the situation on the island as a “humanitarian drama”

The Government of Chile reported this Thursday that it will send humanitarian aid to Cubain the midst of the acute crisis that the island is going through as a consequence of the measures and pressures of the United States.

The Chilean president, Gabriel Boric, pointed out that “through the Chile Fund against Hunger and Poverty of the International Development Cooperation Agency, we will make a contribution to UNICEF along with other Latin American countries.”

For his part, Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren stated in a press conference that His country is “determined” to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Cuba and said that they planned to do it “in the way in which the Foreign Ministry has always worked: through a special fund.”

The Chilean Foreign Minister described the situation on the Caribbean island as a “humanitarian drama” and indicated that in the next few hours the final amount of aid will be detailed, reported an agency office. EFE.

Van Klaveren explained that this special fund has allowed humanitarian contributions to be made in other serious situations, such as the conflict in Ukraine, the situation in Gaza and the consequences of the hurricanes passing through the Caribbean.

“Cuba already received a small amount of humanitarian aid after the last hurricane hit last year,” the chancellor recalled.

The Chilean Government had previously said that it was evaluating sending aid to the island, although it clarified that any decision would depend “on the budgetary and logistical capabilities of the Chilean State.”

Van Klaveren maintained that “beyond the political characteristics that his regime may have, what interests us is to meet the needs of the Cuban people to the extent possible. And we are not alone in that, Mexico is also chartering aid and so is Brazil.”

Likewise, the president Boric called “to end this inhuman blockadeas the United Nations Assembly has already requested on multiple occasions.”

“The blockade that the United States has imposed on Cuba and that has worsened in recent weeks is criminal and an attack on the human rights of an entire people,” he said.

The president added that “there may be differences with Cuba, but “Nothing justifies the damage that is being done to children and innocent citizens.”.

The increase in pressure from Washington on Havana, particularly after the attack on Venezuela and the capture of Nicolás Maduro, has aggravated the deep energy crisis that the island suffers.

As part of those measures, Trump signed a presidential order in late January that establishes tariffs on those who supply fuel to Cuba and that has slowed fuel shipments to the country, which has a paralyzing effect on the economy and life in general.
