Chilean Foreign Minister Carolina Valdivia met Thursday at La Moneda with President Sebastián Piñera to discuss Russia’s military attack on Ukraine.
After the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said that “we condemn the aggression of Ukraine by Russia, despite the various calls of the international community for dialogue with a view to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict, as established in article 2 ° of the Charter of the United Nations”.
In addition, the Secretary of State reaffirmed that Chile “calls for Russia to withdraw its troops and especially to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, and also to avoid the loss of innocent lives and material damage, respecting the Geneva Conventions”.
“However, we maintain our hope that this conflict will be resolved through dialogue and through diplomatic channels and through the peaceful resolution of conflicts,” Valdivia emphasized.
The chancellor also referred to Chileans in Ukraine, noting that 53 compatriots have been counted in that country.
“Indeed, we do not have an embassy or a consulate in Ukraine, but we are working through our consulate in Warsaw, which has the concurrence,” he explained.
Likewise, he reported that Chileans in that nation have been told to “stay safe”, that the border with Poland is open, that there is land transportation to leave the country and that assistance is being requested from friendly countries that do. has representation there.
“On sanctions, as you know, our country’s position is to support those sanctions that have been approved by the United Nations Security Council, that is Chile’s position,” the authority reported.
On the other hand, he said that all the ambassadors of the countries involved in this crisis have already been discussed.
Regarding the economic issue, the Secretary of State affirmed that “here economic effects are going to be produced in an increase, probably, in oil and other fossil fuels and also knowing what the situation is, or the greater exports of Ukraine, it could also be cause an increase in the price of wheat.
