Chile believes that currently an effective dialogue cannot be established with the administration of Nicolás Maduro
The Ministry of Foreign Relations of Chile reported this Tuesday, January 7, that it decided to put an end to the mission of its ambassador in Venezuela, Jaime Gazmuri, after President Nicolás Maduro assured that he will be sworn in before the National Assembly to assume a third consecutive term.
For Chile, what happened in the July 28 elections in Venezuela constitutes a fraud and warns that, after the expulsion of the diplomatic personnel who were stationed in Caracas in August 2024 – when they criticized the results along with other countries such as Argentina, Panama and the Dominican Republic – a “lack of openness” was evident.
In that sense, coupled with what he considers to be a “worsening of the crisis,” he believes that the establishment of an effective dialogue with the Maduro administration is being prevented.
The Chilean Executive, chaired by Gabriel Boric, hopes that Venezuela can return to the path of democracy and the protection of human rights.

On repeated occasions, Boric stated that he does not recognize the triumph of President Nicolás Maduro because the National Electoral Council (CNE) did not present the disaggregated data of the results that would support the electoral entity’s announcement.
Already in September, during the 79th session of the United Nations general assembly, the Chilean president dedicated several minutes to the political and human rights crisis in Venezuela after the presidential elections, of which he assured then that “we are facing a dictatorship” that intends to steal them.

“In Venezuela, we are facing a dictatorship that intends to steal an election, that persecutes opponents and that is indifferent to the exile, not of thousands, but of millions of its citizens,” Boric asserted during his speech, in line with what was expressed by USA and Guatemala in their interventions.
He indicated that a “political solution” to the crisis is necessary, where the victory of the opposition, whose candidacy was led by Edmundo González, is recognized and “a peaceful transition to a fully functioning democracy” is carried out.
After his speech, the Maduro administration decided to suspend commercial air operations with the southern country.
It must be remembered that Chile defended the option of maintaining diplomatic ties with Venezuela despite not agreeing with the government; This is especially true in the case of the murdered former lieutenant Ronald Ojeda.
