Chile: Boric pays tribute to Allende in speech to the nation

Cuban Foreign Minister greeted Chilean President Gabriel Boric

The people are protagonists of this process, says Chilean president

“As Salvador Allende predicted almost 50 years ago, we are again compatriots opening the great malls through which free men, free men and women pass, to build a better society,” said Boric.

Before a crowd gathered in front of the Palacio de La Moneda, he declared that the challenges of his government are immense, but “we are not starting from scratch because Chile has a long history.”

“The emotion that I have felt when crossing the plaza and entering this palace is profound and I need to share it with you, you are a leading part of this process, the people of Chile are a leading part of this process,” he said.

He recalled that this site has witnessed a horror, a past of violence and oppression that has not been forgotten.

From where we speak today, rockets entered yesterday and that can never be repeated in our history, declared the president, recalling the 1973 coup.

Boric, who came to the presidency as a candidate of the Approve Dignity coalition, mentioned low pensions and wages, social inequality, student debt, lack of access to health and decent housing among the big problems that need attention.

“Today the dreams of millions of people are here pushing us to bring about the changes that society demands,” he said.
