Children's Museum raises funds to reopen after two years closed

The Children’s Museum is promoting a fundraising campaign to reopen its doors after two years closed, after the confinement decree due to the pandemic, which added to serious resource problems, and the theft of its electrical system that forced to close for a few days in July 2019


Museito is still a child, although in two months he will be 40 years old. The iconic image of the boy with curly hair and a welcoming smile has been part of the childhood of successive generations of Venezuelans who have visited the Children’s Museum for decades to Give free rein to your curiosity and comply with the maxim that identifies you: Forbidden not to touch.

But for two years, the facilities of the Museum -a pioneer in its style in Latin America- have been closed. In March 2020, when confinement was decreed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it had to close its doors, and despite the fact that little by little social life and meeting spaces returned to regularity in the country, the institution did not was able to reopen because it already added an internal crisis with a shortage of resources, a lot of deterioration and a significant dismantling of the electrical system, after the theft suffered in July 2019, a repair that represented a cost close to 15 thousand dollars.

But Museito does not give up. Since last June 22, they have started a campaign to raise enough funds to allow them to make the necessary arrangements to prepare new exhibitions and reopen in style and thus celebrate their 40 years of existence, a milestone that will be fulfilled next month of August.

“This year the museum celebrates its 40th anniversary and needs everyone’s help to enjoy this incredible experience again. To reopen our doors, we have created an alliance to collect funds through the sale of our souvenirs,” they explain in a message posted on their social media accounts. @museitocaracas on Twitter and Instagram. In addition, they will accept private donations that support the reopening.

Pioneer in its class

The Children’s Museum was inaugurated in 1982 as the first of its kind in all of Latin America. It was an idea conceived and carried out by the then First Lady Alicia Pietri de Caldera, who formed a private foundation for its management and administration.

The Museum was designed for boys and girls to learn by playing, through exhibitions based on scientific principles, experiments, technology, music and art. The fundamental idea is that visitors, especially children, can interact with mechanical and electronic components, living beings and furniture adapted to their height and reach.

Its records mark more than 5 million children and adolescents who have visited its facilities since it was inaugurated four decades ago, in the same emblematic place that is still its headquarters: the Parque Central Complex, in the heart of the city of Caracas. .

In addition to its inaugural facilities, the Museum has an expanded building wing dedicated to space exploration that opened in 1993, after In 1987, NASA began working in partnership with the Museum to design the permanent exhibition and the content that was presented to the public around astronomy.
