The National Police of Peru is again in the eye of the storm, this time for the purchase of 168 luxury vehicles for more than S/17.3 million, destined only to colonels, generals and general lieutenants. According to official documents, this acquisition did not seek to strengthen the operational capacity, but to offer “comfort and support” to the high controls.
The outrage shot up when it was discovered that the resources used for purchase come from items for health, pensions and social benefits. While the agents have to pay for their own pocket, medical attention and medicines, their superiors enjoy new Audi, Toyota Rav4 and Corolla trucks.
In the midst of said scandal, the general commander of the PNP, Víctor Zanabria, turned on the controversy for his statements to Latina: “To fulfill my activities I come by bicycle?”
Zanabria defended said purchase by stating that “by law” the senior officers have the right to a vehicle. “The purchase is a legal issue and has been done in a regular process (…) The purchase budgets are stipulated in the general budget of the Republic (…) by law, to the upper officers as colonels and generals they are responsible for assigning vehicles (…) Comandos vehicles are needed“He said.
“The Latinian manager, what type of vehicle does it have? Because it is the best vehicle for Latin manager”, He added without responding if the expense in luxury cars was justified.
