The Minister of Economy and Finance, Oscar Grahamannounced that the Government will present to the Congress of the Republic a bill to temporarily exempt basic food products from the general sales tax (IGV).
At a press conference, the minister explained that this week the legislative initiative will be approved by the Council of Ministers so that it can be sent to the national representation. He explained that the measure will include products such as chicken, eggs, flour, noodles, meat, among others.
“There is an additional measure that we are approving this week in the Council of Ministers that is the temporary exemption from VAT on the main food products that are part of the products of the basic consumer basket, especially in the lower income sectors, we are exempting chicken, eggs, noodles, flour and meat from VAT, this will be presented to Congress for quick approval”said.

It should be noted that this Sunday the Government decided to exempt fuels such as 84 and 90 octane gasoline from the selective consumption tax (ISC) until June 30 in order to mitigate the rise in the prices of these products and other derivatives.
Agreements after carrier stoppage
The strike of heavy cargo carriers began on March 28. They asked for a solution to the increase in fuel prices, the elimination of the selective consumption tax (ISC), among other measures.
After six days of blockades on the country’s highways, which affected various sectors, the government reached an agreement with the protesters to lift the strike for a period of five days.
