The TV host Andrés Hurtado Grados, better known as ‘Chibolín’ —now under investigation for money laundering— was decorated in 2016 by the Peruvian Army for an alleged contribution to the military institution. This recognition was issued by the then commander general Luis Ramos Hume.
This officer, now retired, presented Andrés Hurtado with the ‘Peruvian Army’ medal in December of that year ‘on the occasion of the one hundred and ninety-second anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho and Army Day’. This recognition is the most important one that the institution gives to civilians. The ceremony took place at the Army Headquarters in San Borja.

What was the contribution to the Army? In a statement, Ramos Hume justified that this person was recognized for “contributing to the achievement of institutional objectives with his professional work,” but did not specify the specific action.
‘CHIBOLÍN’ GIFTS
After receiving the award, the comedian downplayed the criticism and said he received this recognition for paying tribute to the soldiers of the military institution and visiting them in the Valley of the Apurímac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (Vraem).
“Every six months I visit the Vraem, I travel there, I bring my refrigerators, my televisions, my kitchens, I break down everyone’s doors to bring something to my Army. To those mothers, to those nuns who are next to my soldiers, to those men who are holding a rifle and at any moment the terrorists are going to kill them, I pay tribute to them,” said ‘Chibolín’ in his program ‘Porque hoy es sábado con Andrés’.
