At a press conference, María Magdalena Vila Domínguez, provisional president of the Chiapas Institute of Elections and Citizen Participation (IEPC), explained that following the climate of violence generated in the elections of June 2, it was decided, together with the National Electoral Institute, to postpone the elections in the municipalities of Pantelhó, Chicomuselo and Capitán Luis A. Vidal.
However, given the climate of violence and risks to the population, it was decided to hold an election on Sunday, August 25 to renew the mayor, a municipal council and eight councillorships.
Since there was no cessation of violence and in order not to put the population at risk, the IECP and the INE agreed to suspend the extraordinary elections in Pantelhó.
“There were 28 polling stations and we were notified under the INE agreement and by determining the zero adjustment of the 28 polling stations, we are in a position to declare no election in the municipality of Pantelhó due to the prevailing conditions of conflict and insecurity,” he said.
In the case of the municipality of Chicomuselo, the INE District Council Eight determined that there will not be 45 polling stations, but 27 polling stations, so 18 polling stations were closed due to unsafe conditions. This figure represents 60% of the voting modules, however, the election day will continue in this town.
“The INE approved by majority vote the installation of the 27 polling stations, for this district council the necessary conditions exist to carry out the election, we are left with a nominal list of 15,016 voters in Chicomuselo,” he said.
In the case of the municipality of Capitán Luis A. Vidal, 100% of the polling stations will be installed.
