Within a policy of increasing national industry and employment generationthe argentinian government expanded the list of products that need additional import formalities. New ones include candy, alcoholic beverages, golf balls, and bicycle pumps.
The Secretary of Commerce of the Ministry of Economy of Argentina issued a resolution this Monday with which it extended the restrictions for the entry of imported merchandise. There will be more products that will need a Non-Automatic License importation to enter the country.
The brief recalled that on July 5, 2017, the Trade Secretariat of the former Ministry of Production and its modifications, established a system for processing Automatic and Non-Automatic Import Licenses for merchandise included in all tariff positions of the Nomenclature Mercosur Common (NCM) with definitive import destination for consumption.
He indicated that currently “a series of assets have been identified in respect of which, based on the current economic situationit is essential to evaluate their respective trade flows” so it is advisable to modify the previous resolution of 2017.
The official document stated that after “analysis of the current economic and productive situation, it is estimated that there are innumerable import licenses that do not represent necessity or urgency for entry into the country”.

He added that “without being restrictive in its enumeration, it is pertinent to point out that elements such as pressure washers, golf clubs, skis and ice skates, are some of the licenses that merit the change brought about by this resolution”. The document stated that this new regulation “aims to strengthen the import operations required by the productive sectors to sustain and increase production and employment levels”.
The change in the type of license, going from Automatic to Non-automatic, generates greater delays for the importer to receive the merchandise acquired abroad. For these included products, buyers must request the import documentation and the authorities have up to 60 days to authorize it. Otherwise, the deadline is 72 hours.
Despite the income of foreign currency from the soybean dollar, the Argentine government made official the greater control of imports, which is aimed mainly at finished products. The list covers a total of 2,700 tariff positions.
The newspaper El Cronista reported that the list is varied and includes digital cameras, video cards, memory cards, loudspeakers, helicopters, planes, whiskey, slot machineswaffles and bakery items, bovine semen, bijouterie and hand power tools.
But the list is long. According to the newspaper Clarín, there are also golf balls, fryers, saucepansbatteries, LED lamps, lighters, shredders of documents up to banknotesprinters, netbooks, stoves, outboard boat motors and bicycle pumps.
Other products he mentioned were certain types of cheese, poultry, gum, candybeer and wines.
Uruguayan exports
According to the export report for September prepared by Uruguay XXI, sales to Argentina accounted for 7% of the total for the month.
Soybeans were the most placed product in the neighboring country. The brief maintained that Uruguay came to occupy the space left by Paraguay and Brazil, traditional suppliers of the Argentine industry, which reduced their sales due to poor harvests.
Other products that stood out within exports to Argentina were auto parts, vehicles, paints and varnishes and adhesives and plastics.
In turn, so far this year, exports amounted to US$ 886 million, with an increase of 156% in the year-on-year comparison. Argentina was ranked in that period as the fourth destination of Uruguayan sales abroad.
