The Cuban team lost this Monday 1-3 against its similar team from Uzbekistan 1, and finished in 12th place in the classification at the U-16 World Olympiad in Chess, celebrated in Azerbaijan.
The Caribbean cast closed its performance with a balance of five wins and four losses, valid to accumulate 10 units, and thus signed the best performance of the American teams enrolled in the tournament, in accordance with the sports portal Hit.

In the last presentation, Daniel Hidalgo achieved a draw on the first board against Mukhiddin Madaminov, a boy with more than 2,400 Elo points, while on the second table, Leduard González also split the point with Almas Rakhmatullaev, reports the medium.
The final outcome was forged at tables three and four, as José Alejandro Izquierdo gave in to Mukhammadzokhid Suyarov, and Greter Caballero was also unable to resist Umida Omonova’s push.
By boards, the best performance in the Olympiad was achieved by Hidalgo, who from his position as leader accumulated five units in nine games. Leduard and Greter accumulated 4.5 lines in nine presentations and José Alejandro closed with four points to his account.
Remember Hit that Cuba participated in the contest thanks to an invitation from the International Chess Federation (Fide), so it could not register any substitute, something that prevented it from proposing a strategy of rotations and breaks.
“In general we are happy with the attitude, the experience, the possibility of playing and how they approached each round,” coach Rodney Pérez told the media, adding that “half a point more in the tiebreaker would have left us in the top 10, but that is how the Swiss System is”, and recognized that “everyone contributed the most”.

One day before it closed, the Olympiad had Turkey Red as its champion team, which swept all its matches, including one against Cuba, and added 18 points. In their final presentation, the main Turkish cast subdued the Indian team.
For its part, Uzbekistan 1, the island’s rival at the close of the tournament, won the silver medal with 15 lines, and Azerbaijan 1 the bronze with 13.
