A report on the first 100 days of Gladys Gutiérrez’s administration, president of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) controlled by Chavismo, revealed that the Venezuelan Justice allegedly ordered “numerous” releases during that period, in order to reduce overcrowding in prisons. pre-trial detention centers in the country. However, at no time was the number of authorized releases specified.

“Numerous days of legal assistance were held in prisons in the different regions of the country, holding judicial acts (….) Likewise, the approach plan for the decongestion of preventive detention centers was executed,” reported a published press release. by the web portal of the highest judicial entity, based on information contained in said bulletin.

Among the judicial acts carried out in that period are preliminary hearings, trial openings, review of measures and granting of humanitarian measures and alternative formulas for serving sentences and redemptions for study and work. “All this with the participation of other organs of the Justice system,” the text continues.

In addition, according to figures from the TSJ, the different rooms that make up the highest court have shown a resolution of 96.19% of the cases entered since Gutiérrez took over as head of the body, with 50,419 sentences and the holding of 28,003 hearings.

This same week, the Minister of Penitentiary Services, Mirelys Contreras, reported that her portfolio is also working to “help decongest” the preventive prisons that, according to several NGOs, are saturated with a prison population that exceeds the attention capacity.

The organization A Window to Freedom (UVL) assured at the end of June that the overcrowding in these centers “exceeds 150%”. The information was released just one year after the Venezuelan ruler Nicolás Maduro promised to end this situation in 60 days.

According to a monitoring carried out by the organization in 335 of the approximately 500 prisons that exist in the country, at the end of May there were 16,778 detainees when the capacity is for 10,718 people, which represents an overcrowding of 6,060 prisoners.
