Chartists fail to file trial against Quiñónez

The bench of “Honor Colorado” (chartist) of the Lower House, requested an extraordinary session for Wednesday noon to deal with the accusatory libel of the political trial of Sandra Quiñónez, attorney general of the State. However, the initiative did not prosper because Ángel Paniagua, acting president of the Chamber at that time, did not decide to make the call.

A confusion arose because the extraordinary session was requested, but without the call of the president or vice president of the Lower House, it could not be held. Along with this request, Sebastián Villarejo, deputy for the PPQ, requested an extraordinary one to deal with a draft resolution that modifies article 37 of the regulations of the Honorable Chamber of Deputies. The modifications establish that face-to-face sessions must be convened 12 hours in advance. As political trials must be dealt with in person, this was intended to invalidate the request of the Colorado Chartists, but in the end it could not be dealt with.

Sebastián Villarejo, national deputy for the Patria Querida (PPQ) party, explained that face-to-face sessions must be convened 12 hours in advance, except for specific exceptions. This is intended to prevent several deputies from missing sessions due to the haste of the call.

Miguel Tadeo Rojas, national deputy for the caucus of “Honor Colorado” (chartist), regretted for his part that situations are generated where the internal regulations of the chamber are regularly changed, which only generates confusion. “When the modifications of the internal regulations were studied so that specific issues such as political trials, interpellations, be face-to-face, we left a very confusing precedent for the citizenry,” he commented.

At the close of this edition there was no day or time for the continuation of the impeachment trial. According to comments from liberal deputies, the visit of four US senators scheduled for this Friday is expected. After the meeting with them, the treatment of the trial could be activated again.
