Prosecutor Silvia Liliana Porteiro requested the removal of immunity from legislator Charles Carrera (609) to be investigated for having admitted to the Police Hospital a person shot by a police officer.
The incident occurred in 2012 when Carrera, during the Frente Amplio government period, served as general director of the Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior (MI).
At that time Víctor Hernández, a civilian who, after receiving a bullet from a police officer, became paraplegic. Despite not meeting the necessary legal criteria, Hernández was admitted to the Police Hospital for almost three years, a decision that would have had direct authorization from Carrera.
At the request of justice, the MPP senator did not submit to the violation, he directly resigned from the bench to appear before Justice.
No person outside the MI can be treated at the Police Hospital (it is only for police personnel and their families), hence the court summons.
There is one month left until the national elections and Carrera occupies third place in the Senate seat, behind Alejandro Sánchez and Blanca Rodríguez.
