On October 18, the Ministry of the Interior reported that in the first nine months of the year (January-September 2021) all crimes fell compared to the same period in 2020. “Homicides decreased 16.7%, robberies 17.4%, thefts 6.5%, domestic violence 5.8% and cattle ranching 41.6% ”.
Likewise, the Ministry of the Interior referred to the crime figures found in the last quarter (July, August and September 2021).
In this sense, Homicides rose 3.8% compared to the same period in 2020, going from 78 to 81, the secretary of state said.
Regarding robberies, there was a reduction of 18.3% compared to 2020. Regarding thefts, there was a reduction of 0.2% in the third quarter. Regarding domestic violence, an increase of 6.2% was found for the same period in 2020.

However, Carrera indicated that according to data provided by the National Observatory on Violence and Crime of the Ministry of the Interior, in October 2020 there were 30 homicides, while in the same month of this year there were 36 homicides according to “open sources of information ”.
He explained that in October 2021 there were “21 homicides in Montevideo, 4 in Canelones, 3 in San José, 3 in Rivera, 2 in the National Rehabilitation Institute, 1 in Salto, 1 in Paysandú and 1 in Maldonado.”
“Far from there being a reduction in the most violent crime, with the increase in mobility, in the last quarter of August, September and October, there is a growth in homicides that contradicts the official narrative,” remarked the Frente Amplio parliamentarian.
