Executive Branch appoints new vice president for the Central Bank

Martín Inthamoussu was appointed vice president of the board of directors of the Central Bank of Uruguay (BCU), in an event held yesterday, Tuesday 27.

During the aforementioned event, he recalled the progress made in the Uruguayan payment system and announced new milestones, such as payment by transfer through QR code. In addition, he stressed that both the strategy and the goals established for the institution will be maintained.

The event was attended by the Minister and Undersecretary of Economy and Finance, Azucena Arbeleche and Alejandro Irastorza, respectively; the President of the Bank of the Republic (BROU), Salvador Ferrer; the head of the BCU, Washington Ribeiro; the director of the organization, Ignacio Berti, and the Secretary General, Jorge Christy.

In his speech, Inthamoussu said he was pleased to be part of a management team that is achieving the institution’s two main objectives: price stability, based on a decrease in inflation, and financial stability. He also explained that in recent years the institution’s strategy has been based on three pillars: monetary policy, development of the financial and payment system, and management and updating of the institution.

The official also highlighted the intense level of dialogue and interaction with the industrial sector during the current administration, as well as with business chambers and unions, among others. In this regard, he stated that “this has been and will continue to be an open-door board.”

In addition, he recalled the progress made in the field of payments, such as digital checks and multi-acquiring, and announced that payment by transfer via QR code will be incorporated. According to Inthamoussu, once this milestone is reached, the conditions will be in place to implement an open financial system, which will empower citizens and facilitate a data mobility system between entities.

Finally, the new vice president of the BCU stressed that “there was a change of people, but the strategy and the established goals remain.”
