The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elmer Schialerspoke about the official photo of APEC 2024where the president of the United States, Joe Biden, can be seen on the far right of the image. This photo generated controversy in some American media that described the president’s position as “humiliation.”

In that sense, the chancellor was emphatic in pointing out that the position of the leaders in the photo was in alphabetical order, except in the case of the host economy (Peru) which always goes to the middle of the image.
“We wanted to avoid any type of comment that had a speculative basis in preferences or differences. What we did was take the agreement that was always had, which is to put all the leaders in strict alphabetical order,” he assured.
The chancellor highlighted that the bilateral meeting between President Dina Boluarte and her American counterpart was “unbeatable.”
“Both congratulated each other on the close and deep relationship that exists between the countries. Even President Biden who was kind enough to greet the ministers who were present,” he said.
THERE WERE THREE STATEMENTS
The chancellor pointed out that the three declarations that were planned for APEC 2024 were signed. In that sense, he indicated that the first “is the political declaration of the leaders, which synthesizes and globalizes everything that was worked on throughout the year. “.
Likewise, he explained that the ‘Ichma Declaration’ was also approved, which he considered to be “the most important.” “It talks about how we are going to take our economic agents who are currently in informality to formality,” he said in RPP.
Finally, he pointed out that the ‘Lima Roadmap’ was approved, “which is precisely that of informality.”
The chancellor indicated that what was agreed at the summit will be put into effect in 2025: “The idea is that by helping each other, we will have substantive tangible results.” The maximum deadline to carry out the agreed policies is 2040: “We must remember that this is an issue that each economy has to do for itself.”
Schialer considered that it is an “advantage of doing so within the framework of the Asia-Pacific alliance.” “We are going to exchange experiences, that will allow us to see what things were done successfully,” he indicated. Likewise, he pointed out that technical assistance may be exchanged on regulatory and normative matters.
He also highlighted the opportunity that the Asia-Pacific informal market represents. It means 3,000 million people in the Asia-Pacific as the market to be conquered by the informals who become formal. Without a doubt there are costs associated with that transition,” he said.
In that sense, he stressed that Peru has successfully raised the issue of informality.
AGREEMENTS WERE REACHED
The head of the Foreign Ministry pointed out that in the last two APECs no agreements were reached due to the differences that the economies had on certain issues: “What we did and proposed to do in APEC Peru is to return to the fundamentals, to the bases of what it means, which is an intention to bring together the economies of the Asia Pacific, leaving aside everything that is not of that nature” –
For this reason, he highlighted the “ability of our negotiators” so that the “three documents that were going to be adopted by the leaders’ meeting” could be ready.
VISA TO JAPAN
Schialer announced that the Prime Minister of Japan indicated that his country made the decision to unilaterally suspend the visa requirement for Peruvians “holders of ordinary passports or short-term visits.”
“It will take a couple of months to be able to implement all this in the administrative and migration systems,” he clarified.
The Foreign Minister specified that initially a visa was not required to visit Japan. However, nearly 30 years ago, Tokyo made the decision to suspend the visa exemption for Peruvians.
