Chamber Opinion: let’s ensure a National Assembly that reflects the interests and aspirations of the Panamanian people

The recent actions of the majority in the National Assembly once again raise serious concerns among citizens. Being in the middle of the electoral tournament, instead of addressing critical issues for Panamanian society as a priority, a plural number of deputies have chosen to promote Bills whose purposes seem more focused on short-term political gains than on the genuine benefit of the country. .

One of the most alarming aspects is the insistence on Bills such as the creation of new townships without consultation, whose viability and need have not been duly evaluated or discussed with citizens; as well as the promotion of projects without economic support, which create uncertainty in different sectors of society.

Furthermore, it is inexcusable that these deputies have diverted the attention of the Legislative Body from really important initiatives, such as the Forfeiture of Assets and the modifications to the Internal Regulations of the Assembly, as examples that could have a significant impact on the development and governance of the country. The omission to discuss these important issues reinforces the idea that the only agenda that interests those who control the legislature is their own.

It is evident that the National Assembly has lost sight of its role as the legitimate representative of the Panamanian people. Instead of serving as a forum for informed debate and responsible decision-making, it has chosen to prioritize eminently political agendas.

In this context, we reject the actions of those deputies who seek to use the National Assembly as a springboard for their own private and political interests.

We expect a Legislative Body whose actions promote the strengthening of our democracy, that works hand in hand with the citizens for the future of Panama. It is here where the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama will always be an ally.

The destiny of our country is in the hands of all Panamanians, and it is the duty of all Panamanians to ensure that the National Assembly truly reflects the interests and aspirations of the Panamanian people.
