After the National Cargo Transportation Coordinator announced an indefinite strike after an appeal filed by the Panama Chamber of Shipping, against resolution No. JD-33-2022 of May 30, 2022, which establishes minimum rates in transportation of land cargo in containers and trucks from any port to any destination in the country and Central America, Enrique Clement, president of the Chamber and Manager of Marketing and Customer Service of Manzanillo International Terminal, gave his version of events.
Clement assured Radio Panama that in fact the Chamber held a series of meetings with 14 shipping lines and then proceeded to send letters to the Land Transit and Transportation Authority (ATTT), so that they could give explanations on resolution No. JD-33-2022 of May 30, 2022 “and the letter to today’s sun has not been answered”, therefore they filed the appeal in order to receive answers to their questions.
“Since we did not receive a response from the ATTT, we proceeded to present this appeal to understand under what circumstances or for what reasons these rates are approved. The decision that they have had to be shared with us, we just want to know,” he said.
He stressed that they have already held two meetings with the shipping companies and have evaluated withdrawing the resources; as long as the ATTT responds to the letter. He also said that they sent another letter in which they request that the Transit authorities meet with them on Monday.
He said that they also submitted a letter to the logistics cabinet so that it has a role in this issue. “We have sent the letter to Minister Counselor José Alejandro Rojas so that he can attend to the issue at the logistics cabinet level,” he said, stressing that at no time have they touched on the issue of rates within the meetings, they simply question the reasons and the manner in which that the ATTT makes these decisions to establish the minimum rates for land transportation.
