The Chamber of Deputies approved today (12), in Brasília, a bill (PL 7769/17) that considers the murder of elderly people due to this condition to be heinous, the so-called gerontocide. With approval, the expected penalty will be the same for other types of qualified homicides, such as feminicide: from 12 to 30 years in prison. The text now goes to the Federal Senate for consideration.
The penalty will be increased by a third to half if the crime is committed by related or blood relatives (such as children, parents, siblings or spouse); against an elderly person without discernment or with impaired judgment; against elderly people with disabilities; and in the presence of a descendant or ascendant of the victim.
According to the project, it is considered that there are reasons for the elderly condition when the crime involves domestic and family violence or disregard or discrimination against the elderly condition.
