The starter for the Tigres del Licey, César Valdez, was selected this Thursday as “Pitcher of the Year” for the 2022-2023 championship of the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (Lidom).
Valdez secured the distinction in the official league award ceremony, in a closed manner against the Eagles’ right-hander, Yuneski Maya. The veteran high school pitcher obtained 29 votes, five more than Maya’s 24 during a vote that registered the largest number of applicants with votes.
The majority of the members of a jury made up of 69 national sports communicators selected Valdez, who obtained the award for the third time in his career and second in a row. During the regular season, he had nine starts in which he went 6-0 with a 1.51 ERA after allowing 46 hits in 53 2/3 innings while giving up nine earned runs.
He was hit .232 by the opposition while his whip was 1.14, as well as leading the league in wins, innings pitched and quality outings.
