The Foreign Minister, Cesar Landa, met last Monday 17 with Pope Francis. The foreign minister held a dialogue with the Supreme Pontiff on behalf of President Pedro Castillo because Congress denied him authorization to travel to the Holy See.
After exchanging greetings, the foreign minister handed over a document to the pope containing “the excuses of Mr. President Pedro Castillo” for not attending the meeting.
“It has been a usual practice for Congress to differentiate the person from the head of state,” the head of Foreign Relations is heard saying in a video released by the Presidency.
Landa Arroyo would also give explanations to Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See.
“There is a very tense situation, unfortunately, and they have understood that it is not appropriate for him to leave. They considered it out of tune for affirming peace, international law, condemning Russia,” the foreign minister said.
Governance
According to the chancellor Cesar LandaPope Francis called for peace and calm to return to the country in favor of governability.
“(Pope Francis) wants the full restoration of dialogue, of harmony in Peru as the basis of governance and respect for human rights,” said Landa Arroyo.
