After having held a meeting with the president-elect, Gustavo Petro, the director of the Liberal Party, César Gaviria Trujillo, confirmed that the community will support the new president on the legislative agenda.
The former president published a statement in which he reiterates that they will not be in opposition and will not be a stumbling block in Congress for the new head of state.

“In a talk held with the president-elect Gustavo Petro, we expressed our congratulations on his election and the intention of the Liberal Party, together with the Historical Pact and the Green Party, to form the coalition of Congress”, sustain communication.
And adds: “This will allow the president-elect to overcome a political hurdle, and be able to demonstrate that you will have a coalition in your favor that enables it to exercise its status as the triumphant party in the presidential election, in addition to having the position of president of the Senate, essential for implement his government plan.
Additionally, liberalism will hope to have representation in the new government of Petrowhich starts from August 07.
“On a possible participation in the government coalition, we are in a position to wait for the position regarding our participation and political representation of the president-elect. This will allow us to make a decision on how we are going to collaborate with the Petro government,” says Gaviria.
Likewise, the sole leader of liberalism assured that the congressmen who in the second presidential round decided to accompany Gustavo Petro, will not have any problem, since they made use of the independence that the board of parliamentarians gave them.

“As to those who left the Liberal party, we do not feel obliged to listen to their opinions, they are no longer part of our community,” he said.
Finally, the Liberal party expressed its satisfaction with the speech given by President Petro on the day of his election and highlighted the will that has had in recent days to achieve a “national agreement” with all political sectors.
With this support, plus the benches of the Historical, Green and Common Pact, Gustavo Petro he would already be achieving around 54 votes in the Senate of the Republic, which practically already guarantees him the majorities to the government in Congress.
