César Acuña: “We are not going to allow the worst mayor of Lima to be president”

César Acuña: “We are not going to allow the worst mayor of Lima to be president”

Campaign attacks began. Just over three months before the democratic day in which we Peruvians will elect a new president of the Republic, the candidates who aspire to Pizarro’s seat are already rehearsing as a campaign strategy direct attacks on other candidates to try to appropriate more votes.

In that sense, today, the Alliance for Progress (APP) candidate, Cesar Acunalaunched a first direct dart against his opponent from Renovación Popular, the former mayor of Lima Rafael Lopez Aliagawho according to the latest Ipsos survey published in Peru21 He continues to lead the electoral preferences, although with a timid figure that is around 10%.

“We are not going to allow the worst mayor of Lima to be president. If he has not been able to with Lima, how will he be able to with Peru. In politics you must have a vocation for service and execute the public budget to the maximum for the good of the population, and the former mayor of Lima has not fulfilled that,” he stated during a proselytizing event in San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima.

According to the Power Survey, published at the beginning of October 2025 by Semana Económica, a few days before López Aliaga left the Mayor’s Office of Lima to run for the Government Palace, his mayoral administration registered a disapproval of 69.5%, well above the approval, which only reached 29.5%.

However, the situation of Acuña, who left the La Libertad region for his dream of being president of Peru, is no different.

A report from July of last year from the Institute of Economy and Business (IEE), prepared based on data from the National Household Survey (ENAHO) 2024 and the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), concluded that the level of distrust of Liberteños towards Acuña’s management in the regional government was, on average, 80%.

In addition, it was revealed that 66% rated Acuña’s management in La Libertad as deficient. In the Semana Económica Power Survey, 68% of those interviewed considered that Acuña should leave politics.

UNIVERSITY BUSINESS

At another point during his proselytizing meeting in San Juan de Lurigancho, Acuña mentioned that he himself is a case of entrepreneurial success, who did not manage to stand out based on lobbying but rather based on work.

“I don’t have any personal interest because, thank God, I don’t live from politics, I live from my work (…) I want to work for children and young people who only want real opportunities to be successful like me, who comes from a humble family,” he said.

However, on December 7, 2025, the Cuarto Poder journalistic program revealed that the César Vallejo University (UCV), founded by Acuña himself, had granted loans to his political party to be used to finance campaign activities. The report was based on official information from the ONPE, which detailed the contributions and debts declared by the political group. That is, Acuña’s educational business serves him well today in the campaign.
