The Cerro Verde Mining Society It has established itself as one of the main drivers of development in Arequipa, due not only to its production activity, but also to being the main source of employment in the mining sector in the region. This has allowed Arequipa to position itself as the department with the largest number of jobs in the mining sector.
“With more than 5,300 direct employees and nearly 5,000 contractors who collaborate in its operations, Cerro Verde reaffirms itself as the largest mining employer in Arequipa,” explained Julia Torreblanca, vice president of Corporate Affairs of the company, to the Mining Diálogos program of the Institute of Engineers of Peru (IIMP). The executive highlighted the company’s commitment to security, employment and sustainable development of the region.
“More than 60,000 people in Arequipa benefit directly or indirectly from Cerro Verde. We are very pleased because according to Minem we are the main mining employer in Arequipa and we are committed so that our workers, contractors and everyone who provides services to Cerro Verde can return home just as they arrive every day, because for us their safety It is the most important thing,” he said.
According to Minem, the mining sector reached a total of 247,520 jobs in October 2024. Of this total, Arequipa is the main employment generating region, with 14.6% of the total, which is equivalent to 36,065 jobs, of of which 33,743 were occupied by men and 2,322 by women.
They are followed by the La Libertad region in second place with a total of 22,452 workers driven mainly by the company Minera Poderosa and in third place Áncash thanks to the company Minera Antamina. More than 30% of the total mining employment in the country is concentrated between the three regions.
