One of the visits that has aroused particular interest is that of the CEO of TikTokShou Zi Chew, who will be one of the featured speakers at the APEC CEO Summit 2024, to be held from November 13 to 15.

During his presentation, Chew will address current technological challenges, a topic expected to attract more than 1,200 executives. It should be noted that since taking office in April 2021, the executive who lives in his country, Singapore, stayed away from the cameras, until his appearance in March 2023 before the United States Congress, where he testified about security in the social network it leads.

In that hearing that lasted more than five hours, Chew assured that TikTok rejected this application sharing information with the Government of China, as pointed out by various American legislators, and provided a controversial phrase: “With all due respect, American companies “They don’t have a great track record with data.”

“The vast majority of our users come to our platform to be entertained with safe content; However, we recognize that some people post erroneous or dangerous information, and we must address these cases seriously,” he said at the time.

The relationship between TikTok and the United States remains tense. Recently, 14 North American states filed lawsuits against the social network, alleging that it attracts young people with addictive functions and violates their privacy.

TikTok has expressed its disappointment in these actions, indicating that it was willing to collaborate on constructive solutions to the industry’s challenges.

The network in Peru

With more than 1.6 billion users around the world, TikTok is undoubtedly one of the most popular platforms in Peru. According to Ipsos data, 70% of the connected population in the country accessed this social network last year.

Javier Álvarez, trends senior director of Ipsos Peru, commented that TikTok is an influential tool and an excellent showcase for businesses and people who want to offer services.

“I consider it important for companies to be on TikTok. Perhaps few could do without this network, but the majority should have a presence in it,” he declared to this medium.

Although the Peruvian consumer continues to watch television, the most influential medium in the country, and consume traditional media, social networks have become a source of information and a channel to acquire products and services.

“People pay attention to what they see on networks. I go to TikTok to entertain myself, but between laughs I also find information,” said Álvarez.

The Ipsos representative explained that this ‘boom’ transcends generations: although the social network initially captivated young people, today many Peruvians of different ages access the platform. Furthermore, it happens that, although some products are intended for people who do not use networks due to their age (either because they are very old and do not know how to use them, or because they are children who are unaware of the existence of the platform), those who access the information are those They finally pay for the item.

“In 2019, before the pandemic, only 4% of Internet users in Peru accessed TikTok. By 2023, this figure has grown to 70%, surpassing Instagram,” he concluded.
