The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) condemned the recent closure of Radio Darío, in León, an action carried out by order of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

“The closure of Radio Darío is another blow to freedom of expression and the press in Nicaragua, but the Ortega Murillo regime will not be able to bury 73 years of struggle for justice, democracy and human rights. They will not be able to erase them from the collective memory,” denounced the organization through a Twitter account.

He emphasized that the radio station and other independent media outlets whose facilities have been persecuted, usurped and destroyed, in addition to dozens of journalists forced into exile, threatened or imprisoned “today more than ever they are at the forefront of the struggle for Nicaragua, their voices They cannot be silenced.”

“Our solidarity and support for @radiodarionito all the media and independent journalists who continue to fight from Nicaragua or from exile, for truth, democracy and human rights in Nicaragua. #They will not shut us up#FreedomOfExpressionNow» concluded the Cenidh.

After the new attack on Radio Darío, who survived a raging fire in 2018 —caused by Ortega mobs during social protests—, in addition to siege and repression, journalist Aníbal Toruño, owner of the radio station, expressed through his account from Twitter that “neither turning off equipment nor arbitrarily withdrawing a license will succeed in silencing us or silencing the truth.”

“After 73 years, Radio Darío is and will be a voice that defends justice, democracy and citizen rights. Far from intimidating us, their actions strengthen us”, she affirmed with aplomb.

The León station is one of the few independent radio media that continue to resist the onslaught of the Sandinista government and report on the crisis that the country is going through, which caused it to always be in the eye of the Ortega dictatorship.

The new attack and censorship of Radio Darío occurs when the Ortega regime has intensified its siege and repression against the independent press, closing more than 20 local media outlets. Among them is the confiscation of the newspaper La Prensa, Confidencial, 100% Noticias, Trinchera de la Noticia. It should be noted that Ortega has exerted economic pressure against television channels 10 and 12 and the radio station Radio Corporación.
