Cenidh denounces that 14 political prisoners have been disqualified for life from holding public office

The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) denounces the new “repressive action” of the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo against 14 political prisoners accused of the crimes of “undermining national integrity and spreading false news.”

“For Cenidh, this is an affront to the law, an affront to intelligence, an affront to the international community and international organizations for the protection of human rights, which are constantly insisting on condemning violations of the guarantees of due process, the that political prisoners in Nicaragua are subject to,” says a recent statement from the defense organization.

“We have a list of more than 14 political prisoners to whom the same application has been made, with the aggravating factor that the judges at the request of the prosecutors, without any formality, without having any power to change a letter of a sentence that is firm, they alter its content and it is the last straw that they are not only doing it with those sentences that have not yet been sent to the higher instance due to the appeals filed, they are even criminally modifying others that are or have been ruled by the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ)”, adds Cenidh.

They explain that articles 46, 47 and 66, among others, of the current Penal Code establish what the penalties are, their nature, how they are applied, and classify them as main and accessory penalties. In this case it happens that the judge imposes the prison sentences that supposedly deserve the crimes attributed.

They end by denouncing “before the world this legal barbarism, this indiscriminate persecution that is the total destruction not only of the institutional framework but of any vestige of legal security that remains in the country, is the annihilation of the political prisoners for whom we demand their immediate release ».

Recently, the Mechanism for the Recognition of Political Prisoners denounced that the list of citizens imprisoned for being critical of the Ortega regime increased to 245. Of the list presented by the organization, 61 are being held in the DAJ known as “El Chipote.” 16 citizens are in municipal police stations and 12 at home in prison. 146 are being held in the different centers of the National Penitentiary System. In addition, the number of political prisoners over 60 years of age increases to 40.

A large number of these citizens imprisoned by Ortega have been sentenced and disqualified for life from holding public, political or popularly elected office and the exercise of political rights.
