Celia Moreno: “The State is failing hundreds of girls in their rights”

The psychologist and human rights defender, Celia Moreno, addressed this Thursday on Radio Panama the issue of sexual violation of minors, after the pregnancy of an 8-year-old girl with 25 weeks of gestation became known on Wednesday.

In her opinion, the State is failing hundreds of girls in their rights, because they are not only violated physically but psycho-emotionally, their freedoms, the right to decide their future.

“A fundamental element so that this does not continue to happen is reproductive and scientific sexual education, because this creates a space where boys can talk about what is happening to them. Sex education makes it possible to stop the abuse in its beginnings and not continue for years, in some cases, “suggested the specialist.

He stated that he believes he is pushing the Government and the National Assembly to make decisions. “One of those decisions is to make that crime imprescriptible (child sex trade, child trafficking, child sexual abuse) because they cause so much trauma,” he added.

He recommended that scientific sexual and reproductive education cannot be guided by any dogma, since this country is secular and all visions must be respected. “It is not the Christian vision that has to prevail because not everyone is Christian.”

He added that therapeutic abortion protocols must be respected, which means that when the family realizes that the girl is pregnant, they can resort to therapeutic abortion, which is the law of the republic.
