“Celia Cruz, the most beautiful thing that Cuba gave us”

MADRID, Spain.- This Friday the social networks have been filled with messages of admiration and congratulations to the “Queen of Salsa”, Celia Cruz, who would turn 97 this October 21.

Artists, music lovers and Cubans in general have remembered his greatness or representative moments of his career; as well as they have shared images and songs of the Cuban diva.

“Happy Birthday”, “Happy Birthday”, “Única”, “Viva Celia”, dozens of users have written.

“Myths are immortal. Today would be the 97th birthday of the queen of the Cuban guaracha: Celia Cruz. Congratulations on her day. The Cuban singer Haydée Milanés also remembered to Celia: “Happy birthday queen. Thanks a lot”.

For its part, the Mexican radio station El Heraldo Radio, this Friday will be broadcasting songs by Celia Cruz and said listeners: “Send us your requests!”

While Juana Peña described her as “an icon of Latin music and the undisputed idol of salsa.”

“She will always be remembered for her powerful and melodious voice, her Cuban flavor and her great charisma. You will always live, Celia! Sugar!,” she added.

Cuban singer Celia Cruz, popularly known as the “Queen of Salsa” or “the guarachera of Cuba”, was born on October 21, 1925 in the Havana neighborhood of Santos Suárez and died on July 16, 2003 in New Jersey, USA.

He left Cuba on July 15, 1960 for Mexico, to fulfill a 4-week contract. She never came back. Already at that time he had made his opposition to the Castro regime clear. She was considered persona non grata by the Cuban dictatorship.

After the death of his mother, he proposed to travel to Cuba, but permission was denied, thus reaffirming his decision never to return to the country.

Interpreter of popular songs such as “La negra tú tumba’o”, “Life is a carnival”, “Ríe y Llora”, “Hey how it goes”, “Que le den candela” and “Burundanga”, she was acclaimed for her voice, his extravagant way of dressing and his carefree projection on stage.

The concerts began with his popular expression “Sugar”recognized in Cuban and universal culture.

Throughout her career she received 19 nominations and was a 5-time winner of the Grammy Awards. She recorded more than 70 albums and participated in 10 film productions.

Celia Cruz died on the afternoon of July 16, 2003, at her home in Fort Lee, New Jersey. After her death, her body was taken to Miami and New York to pay her respects. The funeral in New York was one of the largest ever experienced in that city.
