Celebrate International Food Waste Awareness Day

International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day initiative that was promoted from Argentina and other countries in the Assembly of the United Nations (UN) in 2019will be held for the third time next Thursday, September 29.

The Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nationthe Corporation of the Central Market of Buenos Aires and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized a meeting under the motto “Markets without waste: good practices to recover fresh food”.

They intend to make visible the losses and waste of fresh food, especially fruits and vegetables, one of the categories that presents the most waste, and focus on solutions that contribute towards a transition to sustainable, efficient and inclusive food systems.

The meetingwhich will have a hybrid format, will be held at the headquarters of the agricultural portfolio with transmission via streaming through the Argentine Food YouTube channel.

By then, Argentina presented to the FAO the proposal to establish this date by the United Nations system.

During the UN General Assembly last December, the celebration of this date was approved as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.

Since 2015, Argentina has had the National Plan for the Reduction of Food Loss and Waste led by SAGyP, and together with the national network of members and allies, it advances in the implementation of the Valoremos los Alimentos 2030 strategy, and generates tools in the territory to promote and stimulate more sustainable, inclusive and resilient agri-food systems.

Reducing food loss and waste is a global priority agreed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) defined in 2015 and agreed upon by all the member countries of the United Nations Organization.

The consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the leading role of the various actors in the agri-food sector due to the essential nature of the food and the importance of ensuring a correct supply.

Currently, some lines are being developed focused on deepening the work with the markets, and during the last stretch of 2022 a protocol for the prevention and reduction of food losses and waste will be developed for the actors of the wholesale food trade, with a focus on markets. and supply centers of the country, which guide the clear guidelines and technical recommendations for the reduction of food losses and waste.
