The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday (30) to address the issue of deportations, by the North American government, of illegal immigrants. The meeting was requested this Sunday (26) by the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and scheduled by Honduran president Xiomara Castro, who also presides over Celac.
The meeting will be held in a hybrid format, but Petro is expected to participate in person, in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa.
Petro’s request came after Colombia refused the entry of US military planes, which were carrying Colombian immigrants deported this Sunday.
“I can’t make immigrants stay in a country that doesn’t want them, but if that country returns them it must be with dignity and respect for them and our country. On civilian planes, without treating them as criminals, we will receive our compatriots”, wrote the president on his social networks, adding that Colombia must be respected.
In response, United States President Donald Trump announced that tax, at 25%products from Colombia that are imported by your country.
Yesterday, the Colombian government announced that the impasse between the two countries had been overcome. Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo will travel to the United States capital, Washington DC, for high-level meetings with North American representatives.
“We will continue to receive Colombian men and women who return as deportees, guaranteeing them conditions worthy of citizens subject to rights”, says a statement released by the Colombian government.
According to the note, the Colombian government made the presidential plane available to facilitate the return of deported Colombians. “Colombia reinforces that diplomatic channels of dialogue will be maintained to guarantee the rights, national interest and dignity of our citizens.”
