Ceara Hatton warns bleak outlook for sargassum covers seas

Ceara Hatton alerta panorama sombrío por sargazo cubre mares

The Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources (MMA), Miguel Ceara Hattonforecasts a “bleak” economic outlook due to the thousands of tons of sargassum reaching the Caribbean Sea, which constitutes the greatest threat to tourism, the country’s main economic activity.

Ceara Hatton considers that the Caribbean Sea should be declared “National security”since the economy of the Dominican Republic depends almost entirely on its waters and sands.

With a view to finding solutions to the problem, the MMA set up the Multisectoral Table for the Integral Management of Sargassum, something that has become a problem that does not belong to the country nor was it generated in this territory, but that affects the nation in a meaningful way.

He expressed that it is a problem associated with climate change, for which reason it is necessary to work in the search for a solution, for which a team is formed to monitor and develop investigations that ruin the solution to the problem. He indicates that the DR contributes very little to global warming, just 0.084 of the total, however the country is among the most vulnerable in the world.

He warns that the trajectories are diffuse, so it is not known how the country will progress regarding the impact of the climate changewhen the scientific evidence indicates that the goal of 1.5 warming will not be achieved, but that it would be a higher figure in the comparison between the pre-industrial revolution situation and today.

“It will probably be 2 points and a peak, with the exception that it is an average value, that is, it will have a variance that it is not known where we are going to fall, if in the upper part or in the lower part,” he explained. He warns that an unwanted point is being reached in terms of heating, and that there are serious problems with the trajectory, where it influences the final results.

“So let’s wait for uncertain scenarios, which can greatly affect our fundamental economic activity, which is tourism, which is why I have always said that the Caribbean Sea It should be a matter of national security,” the official said.

Ceara Hatton points out that if something happens to the Caribbean Sea, the way of life of the Dominicans would be greatly affected.

He explained that what the sargassum issue indicates is that they have a great potential to cause enormous damage to the Dominican economy and the Caribbean region, including Mexico.

The activity was also attended pavel isaMinister of Economy, Planning and Development, as well as the representatives of the UN in the country, of the European Union.
