Why a public care system?
Araceli Damián, Secretary of Welfare of Mexico City, explained that currently about 3 million people in Mexico City could need some type of care. He indicated that children from zero to five years old require special attention, since the time and effort invested in their care are essential to guarantee their healthy development.
Regarding the disparity in care tasks, 1.2 million women in the capital provide unpaid care, compared to 660,000 men, who also perform these tasks but dedicate less than 50 hours a week.
The people who are in charge of these jobs are mostly between 18 and 40 years old, which represents 40% of the population. He highlighted that 10% of those who provide care are minors.
Axes of the Public Care System
In this context, the head of government detailed the three axes of the Public Care System: revalue the work of caring for people and the home, reduce the time and effort that women dedicate to these tasks, and redistribute them so that the State, companies and society also take an active role.
The Public Care System includes 200 laundries, 200 new Child Development Centers, 200 community kitchens, additional services such as spas, swimming classes, rehabilitation centers for people with disabilities, day homes for older adults and a school for “new masculinities.” ”.
Seeks to protect the Care System for the future
Clara Brugada announced that she is already working on sending to the Congress of Mexico City a proposed law on the Care System that guarantees the necessary resources for the operation of all the services proposed.
This law seeks to establish the bases and rules of operation to delimit the work that corresponds to both the central government and the municipalities in their participation in the Care System.
“It also plans for the short, medium and long term in the Care System, it is like the task of water, we have to plan for the future and that includes a protection system for girls, boys and women,” he commented.
He highlighted that this law could be sent for the next one in the coming weeks and trusted that there will be consensus with all parliamentary groups to analyze the bill and include topics from the proposals that already exist in the legislature.
