CDMX, Edomex and Jalisco concentrate almost half of the counterfeit bills

Veracruz, Nuevo León and Puebla are the entities that followed in the number of fake pieces with more than 10,000 pieces each.

The states where the lowest number of fake pieces were registered are Baja California Sur, with 518 pieces; Campeche with 686 pieces and Chiapas with 1,041 bills.

Counterfeiting of banknotes in Mexico peaked in 2022 when 360,926 pieces were counterfeited. Already in 2023, the number was reduced by 17%.

In the second quarter of 2024, right on campaign and election day in the country, counterfeiting of banknotes peaked with 78,218 apocryphal pieces.

In the third quarter the figure fell 1% and if this rate of counterfeiting continues, 2024 would close with more than 300,000 fake pieces.

What is the most counterfeited bill in Mexico in 2024?

The Bank of Mexico, through the Quotient of counterfeit pieces captured per million authentic ones in circulation, indicates that the most counterfeited banknotes in 2024 They are the 200 pesos with 50.9 pieces per million.

The second most counterfeited bill is the 500 pesos, with 38.9 pieces per million in circulation and the 1,000 pesos with 21.5 pieces per million.

In 2023, the most counterfeited bill was the 50 pesos with 97.8 pieces per million in circulation.
