Only this year’s first quarter added 34 deaths from traffic incidents with cargo vehicles, according to the reports published by the Mobility Secretariat (Semovi).
One of the greatest tragedies was the explosion of the Maternal Child Hospital of Cuajimalpa, recorded on January 29, 2015. The incident occurred when the pipe supplied the LP gas hospital, but a leak in the hose used to deposit the fuel – causing for not securing the safety valve – caused the detonation.
In this incident eight people died and 73 more were injured, in addition to causing the collapse of the hospital. The clinic was rebuilt and open to the public seven years later, in November 2022.
On March 21, 2019, two pipes exploded in Milpa Alta, in the town of San Antonio Tecómitl, where six people were injured. LP gas load vehicles were on a site used as a parking lot for this type of units.
In February 2021, the explosion of one of these vehicles was registered in front of the Jamaica market, when it supplied a place. The incident left eight injured people and about 700 people who lived around the supply market were temporarily evicted.
Claudia Sheinbaum, then head of government of Mexico City, said that more supervision was required on compliance with security measures for the operation of LP gas pipes, so it would work for it together with the federal government.
“It seems to me that what is required to increase is surveillance in its operation, I do not believe that both regulations and guaranteeing the security of transport mainly,” said Sheinbaum, today president of Mexico.
On November 18, 2022, again in Milpa Alta, two LP gas pipes exploded while they were inside a corral where trucks of Route 30 were also stored. Although no deaths were recorded, neighbors of the nearby homes were evicted before the fire, as a gas station was close.
On May 26, 2025, a Pemex pipe with capacity for 31,500 liters of gasoline was hit against one of the columns of the second floor of the peripheral ring in the Lomas de Chapultepec neighborhood, Miguel Hidalgo Mayor’s Office.
The incident spilled around 20,000 liters of fuel, however, the operation implemented by the heroic fire department and authorities prevented a fire from occurring.
Explosion in Concordia
The speeding with which the gas pipe was circulating is the probable cause of the incident in the La Concordia bridge, registered on September 10, said the head of the Attorney General of Mexico City (FGJ CDMX).
The tank turned suffered a fracture of about 40 centimeters in the cap due to the impact against a wall and on the pavement, according to the official.
For its part, the head of government, Clara Brugada, announced that it will work in a protocol to reduce risks to the operation of this type of vehicles, which will be prepared by the Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC), together with the Security, Energy and Environment Agency (ASEA).
