CBP One appointment can be requested from states in southern Mexico

Migrantes cubanos en México

MÉRIDA, Mexico – The states of Chiapas and Tabasco have joined the areas in central and northern Mexico from which migrants can request appointments through the CBP One application.

An AP report The announcement made on Saturday by the US Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) will reduce the risks to migrants entering through the southern border of Mexico and who will now not have to cross and remain in the center and north of the country to access the application.

The measure also benefits the Mexican government, which will not have to deal with migrants crossing and staying in central and northern areas of the country just to request one of the 1,200 daily CBP appointments.

“We are constantly working with our partners in the Mexican government and working together to adjust policies and practices in response to the latest migration trends and security needs,” CBP said in a statement.

Timeouts

Last April, the United States Embassy in Mexico reported that wait times to obtain an appointment on the CBP One application can extend for several months.

The situation is due to high demand for the service and limited processing capacity.

Since its launch in January 2023 and through May/June 2020, the CBP One app has been used by more than 687,000 people who have successfully scheduled their appointments to appear at U.S. ports of entry.

Used primarily by Cubans, Venezuelans and Haitians, this digital tool has established itself as an orderly, safe and regular way to enter the country, especially for those who lack sufficient documents for admission.
