Castroism cannot with history

Castrismo, Cuba, Cubanos, Martí

Havana Cuba. — Whenever the almanac indicates that it is the first days of the month of October, Castro’s propaganda prepares to highlight, in its own way, two dates that mark milestones in our history. We refer to the presentation of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in 1965 and to the distant October 10, 1868, when Carlos Manuel de Cespedes began the struggles for national independence.

Let’s see, through a recent journalistic work that appeared in the newspaper Granmahow the Castro discourse interprets both events: “Just as the Revolution in Cuba has been one since October 10, 1868, when Carlos Manuel de Céspedes lit the independence flame in La Demajagua, the Communist Party of Cuba is heir to the Revolutionary Party Cubano, founded by José Martí in April 1892, to guide the same desire of the Father of the Nation” (“Your Party lives in the heart of Cuba”October 3 edition).

This is, obviously, another example of Castro’s hackneyed strategy for presenting the past in such a way as to legitimize the current state of affairs on the Island. These are arguments that the rulers strive to emphasize in the minds of their unconditional supporters, but above all in the consciousness of the new generations. These are arguments that are easily refuted by anyone with elementary knowledge of our history and who conducts a dispassionate analysis of the facts.

It is not possible to equate a feat permeated by liberal ideology, which, among other characteristics, was built on a Constitution that established a clear and healthy separation between the executive, legislative and judicial powers —hence the deposition of President Céspedes himself at a given moment— , and that, in addition, recognized individual freedoms, with another revolution that annulled those freedoms and where the real power rested with a single person.

For this reason it is absolutely false that the Revolution in Cuba was only one. There was a liberal Revolution that began in 1868 and then a Marxist-Leninist dictatorship from 1959, completely removed from the liberal precepts of illustrious personalities such as John Locke or the Baron de Montesquieu.

No less unfortunate is the idea of linking the Party founded by Martí in 1892 with the current Party that governs and oppresses Cubans. Let’s begin by seeing what Article Five of the current Constitution of the Republic says: “The Communist Party of Cuba, unique, Martian, Fidelist, Marxist and Leninist, organized vanguard of the Cuban nation, based on its democratic character and permanent link with the people, it is the highest leading political force of society and of the State”.

And now let’s examine the Bases of the Cuban Revolutionary Party founded by Martí. Specifically, let us appreciate what its Article 5 expresses: “The Cuban Revolutionary Party does not have as its objective to bring to Cuba a victorious group that considers the Island as its prey and domain, but rather to prepare, with as many effective means as foreign freedom allows, war what must be done for the decorum and good of all Cubans, and deliver a free homeland to the entire country.”

The difference is clear and root. While the current rulers of the Island maintain a Party —falsely self-qualified as democratic— permanently to dominate the entire society, the Apostle of our independence founded a Party solely to organize the contest against the Spanish colonialists. Once that deed was concluded, the Party was not necessary, since the homeland would belong to and for all.

It is clear then that, despite Castroism, there will never be a hereditary connection between the two political groups.
