President Pedro Castillo changed his position in favor of giving Bolivia access to the sea and now he considered that he expressed himself poorly during his interview with CNN. The president clarified that he will not make a decision of this type without first consulting with the population.
“Yes, I expressed myself badly, I apologize to our people. I want to tell you again that I will do nothing in my government without consulting the people,” Castillo Terrones told the regional media outlet La Noticia.

The head of state stated that he would not cede Peruvian territory to another country and that his proposal is to expand the territory of Boliviamar in order to generate in that area a point of “economic and tourist growth” for the highland country.
“Never in my life could I cede an inch of Peruvian territory to another country. Rest assured, our brothers, that I will be the first to defend the integrity of our country and that our proposal for a maritime concession does not contemplate national sovereignty, “he said for the aforementioned media.
Likewise, he recalled that the cession of maritime territory for Bolivia took place during the governments of Alberto Fujimori and Alan García. “We must remember that these agreements grant five kilometers of beach and 800 meters of width in favor of Bolivia and that they can use them for 99 years,” he added.

Pedro Castillo spoke about giving sea to Bolivia in an interview with CNN
In an interview last Tuesday, January 22, President Pedro Castillo stressed for CNN’s Conclusions program that he will not arbitrarily give Bolivia access to the Peruvian sea, despite the fact that he welcomes this popular demand from the neighboring country.
“We will consult the people. For that, the people need to manifest themselves. (…) What would happen if the Peruvians agree? I owe myself to the people, I would never do something that the people do not want,” Castillo told journalist Fernando del Rincón.
Similarly, the head of state admitted having shouted “sea for Bolivia” on one occasion during 2018, when he participated in a union event in that country. “I did not say it as president,” the president clarified.
