The week from December 11 to 17 closed with 4,381 new cases of covid-19, corresponding to a new wave that has Asunción as its current epicenter.
The general director of Health Surveillance, Guillermo Sequera, pointed out that Asunción entered level 4, with the highest community circulation of the virus, in this epidemiological week.
Regarding hospitalizations, the week closed with 215 people, 9 of whom are in intensive care units. As for deaths, nine were registered in the last week corresponding to people with comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes or obesity.
Of the new cases, 57% correspond to reinfections. The increase in cases corresponds to the forecast of a new wave for the months of December and January.
However, this time fewer hospitalizations due to the disease are expected thanks to the advancement of vaccination. This particularity was observed in the periods of case increases in January and July of this year.
Serious cases of covid-19 are observed among the population over 60 years of age and with risk conditions, such as obesity, hypertension, among others, so it is recommended that this population apply the booster doses four months after the last vaccine received.
The health authorities recalled the importance of booster vaccination to deal with new variants of the respiratory virus.
