He District Institute for Animal Protection and Welfare (IDPYBA) revealed that during the month of December 2024, an alarming increase in cases of animals affected by loud noises and the use of gunpowder was reported in several locations in the capital.

The areas most affected by this phenomenon are Engativá, with 10 affected animals (eight domestic and two wild), followed by Fontibón, where six cases were reported (all domestic), and Usaquén, with 4-four reports (three domestic and one wild).

This geographical pattern reveals a worrying trend and shows that the effects not only affect domestic animals, but also wild ones, who are disoriented and exposed to danger due to the noise generated by gunpowder.
According to the deputy director of Citizen Culture and Knowledge Management, Ana María Hinestrosa Villa, the reports of animals allegedly affected by the use of gunpowder are alarming.
“So far in December 2024 we have received 42 reports of animals affected by gunpowder. The towns with the most reports are Engativá, Usaquén and Fontibón, which reflects the urgent need to reinforce our awareness campaigns,” said Hinestrosa Villa.
The effects of gunpowder on animals include disorientation, tachycardia, and even, in the most serious cases, death. These incidents highlight the importance of promote the responsible use of fireworks and respect for the safety and well-being of animals.
“Gunpowder can cause serious illnesses, even the death of animals, so we invite everyone to enjoy the festivities without resorting to the use of these dangerous elements,” added the official.
